"Just listening to someone's voice as they make a controversial argument is humanizing," says UC Berkeley professor Julia Schroeder. The act of listening to someone speak rather than engaging in toxic online fighting can make us less likely to dehumanize each other. The power of human connection through voice is evident, as seen in the impact of politicians appearing together in commercials and the viral Heineken commercial 'World Depart.' In this commercial, strangers with opposing views come together and build a bar, leading to a greater sense of understanding and empathy."
