Bill Nygren - Fundamental Investing From A Generalist’s Perspective

Value Investing with Legends

NOTE

What's the Process of Buying a Stock?

The analyst job is to demonstrate to us that the stock meets all our criteria./nThe first of that being that we want it to be a significant discount to business value./nSo a lot of the report the analyst writes up will be how business value is determined in the particular industry that the company is then, what examples of acquisitions we've seen in the industry, what public market options are available for similar companies and trying to demonstrate a path toward defining intrinsic value and then showing that the stock is at a big discount./nThen it's showing that the outlook is favorable for the company that it should be able to grow as fast as the market or at least grow plus pay dividends./nSo that process is, I would say almost like a private equity perspective to how is this company likely to change over the next seven years and therefore maybe be worth something quite different? Why would investors be willing to pay a quite different price for it five to seven years out than they are today?
