In Our Time: Philosophy

NOTE

The Just War Doctrine

The just war tradition, dating back to the thirteenth century, modified the concept of christ through the centuries. However, it conflicts with the pacifist idea of loving one's enemies. European tradition recognizes that pacifism can encourage violence and lead to terrible outcomes. The just war tradition believes violence can be self-destructive and requires regulations. This tradition is still relevant today, although it has been weakened by the belief that war is justified in defense of nation states.
