NOTE

Auctioning Block Space, Fee Market Dynamics, and Congestion-Based Pricing in EVM

In the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), block space is auctioned due to high demand exceeding supply, leading to variable clearing prices ranging from zero to high values like $5 to $50 based on the network activity level. In the upcoming network Mona, initial block space supply is expected to surpass demand, suggesting a zero clearing price to prevent spam. However, to avoid spam while enabling applications, a demand and cost balance needs to be maintained. The fee market and pricing mechanism in Mona are still under early ideation, with the intention to learn from others in the research space. Congestion-based pricing is considered, where highly demanded state items may not necessarily be priced higher, as demand could signal existing cache efficiency. The frequency of cache clearing varies per node based on memory availability, following a least recently used cache approach without clearing at the end of every block.
