Theoretical Neuroscience Podcast

NOTE

The Brain's Speed, Mapping the Brain, and the Role of Meaning

The brain responds quickly to predators within milliseconds. However, neuroscience has focused too much on mapping the brain to manmade notions like attention and perception. Francis Crick emphasized that the brain's biophysical operations are connected to behavior, and whether we view them as computation depends on usefulness. While it is difficult to escape the concept of computation due to our reliance on computers, assigning computation to all physical systems renders the meaning of computation meaningless. Biology and evolution prioritize survival and reproduction, not computation. The intrinsic nature of the brain is crucial for understanding higher-level concepts like meaning, as it cannot be imposed from outside. Despite the darkness inside the brain, meaning is formed intrinsically.
