NOTE

Efficiency Demands Class Distinction

The historical development of labor division in capitalism leads to a complexification of the working class, challenging traditional Marxist classifications of social structures. As production becomes more efficient, particularly in assembly lines, the need arises for oversight and design roles, creating a distinction between skilled and unskilled labor. This process de-skills lower class workers while concentrating control over production processes in the hands of a new managerial elite. The example of Taylorism illustrates how these dynamics intensify by segmenting labor further, which not only diminishes the autonomy of individual workers but also solidifies class stratifications within the workforce.
