#229 ‒ Understanding cardiovascular disease risk, cholesterol, and apoB

The Peter Attia Drive

NOTE

Understanding the Importance of APOB as a Biomarker for Cardiometabolic Risk

The terms LDL and HDL are misused as there is no laboratory metric called LDL or HDL. Instead, there is HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, abbreviated LDL C and HDL C, as well as LDL P and HDL P, which measure the particle number of LDL. APOB concentration is considered the most important number to predict cardiometabolic risk as it captures all atherogenic particles, including LDLs, LP linoleis, and VLDLs. APOB is preferred over LDL and HDL for assessing risk. It is erroneous to say HDL is good cholesterol and LDL is bad cholesterol, as the cholesterol in both types is the same, but LDLs as lipoproteins are bad actors because of their actions.
