Exploring the Origins of Mentalization-Based Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder
Dr. Bateman and Dr. Fornigee collaborated to develop mentalization-based therapy for borderline personality disorder by merging their expertise in psychoanalysis, research, attachment theory, and adult psychiatry. Dr. Bateman, initially working with borderline personality disorder patients, sought research guidance from Dr. Fornigee, leading to their joint endeavor. Dr. Fornigee's attachment background complemented Dr. Bateman's psychiatry knowledge, resulting in the creation of a therapy approach focusing on mentalization. This innovative approach was influenced by the emerging concept of mentalizing in attachment research, solidifying the foundation of mentalization-based therapy for treating borderline personality disorder.
