A defence of human uniqueness against AI encroachment, with Kenn Cukier

NOTE

**The Unknowing as a Source of Transformation **

The insight is that a significant part of being human is not about having information, but rather about the absence of information. In spiritual traditions, this absence is seen as an emptiness or unknowing, which is the space where transcendence and insight can occur. This emptiness is not dependent on having knowledge or information, but rather on reaching a state of mental vacuity and solitude. It is in moments of crisis or personal loss that people often find themselves alone and in this state, and it is through embracing this emptiness that they can learn something. The speaker contrasts this with the way current AI works, which relies on having information rather than embracing the absence of information. They propose that for AI to truly be able to encompass all aspects of human experience, it would need to be able to undergo processes similar to meditation and mourning, allowing it to make decisions in subtly different ways. However, the speaker finds this idea preposterous, because humans are embodied beings.
