What Did the Burnt Offerings Really Mean? – Leviticus E3

BibleProject

NOTE

The Atonement Is What Repairs the Relationship

Atonement in biblical Hebrew signifies repaying for damages and purifying what has been vandalized by moral failings to maintain proximity to the source of life and God's presence. It is the means to repay and purify the vandalism in order to stay connected to God, receive life, and be in communion. The word 'atonement' in Leviticus implies repairing relationships, offering more than just sacrifices. The five offerings in Leviticus symbolize various aspects of worship and relationship with God: the ascension offering (or burnt offering), the gift offering (or grain offering), the peace offering (or fellowship offering), the purification offering (or sin offering), and the restitution offering (or guilt offering). Each offering carries layers of meaning and richness that are difficult to capture in a single English word.
