Challenges of Economic Disparities among Professionals and Working Class Individuals
Economic disparities have led to increased stress among working class individuals and professionals. Working class individuals have suppressed wages and limited income growth compared to the post-war era. Professionals, despite obtaining a college education, often end up in jobs unrelated to their field of study that do not offer significant pay increases. Many jobs available to college graduates today do not provide better pay than factory jobs in the 70s, nor do they offer the pension benefits. This lack of economic rewards for obtaining a college education creates frustration and cultural antagonism. Professionals tend to hold on to cultural signifiers to differentiate themselves, leading to conflicts with workers. The reliance on cultural capital creates a barrier to cooperation between professionals and workers, often resulting in infighting and alienation. This division leaves groups primarily in the hands of professionals, impeding effective mass politics due to their small representation in the population.
