Uncovering Atrocities in War

Evidence of knife or sword wounds on a captured Japanese soldier revealed a disturbing directive by their officers to ill-treat and torture Australian soldiers. This was intended to discourage surrender and encourage fierce fighting by instilling fear of similar treatment among Japanese soldiers. The Australian soldiers were subjected to atrocities in order to manipulate the behavior and morale of both the Australian and Japanese soldiers in combat.
