NOTE

Understanding Human Violence: The Balance of Proactive and Reactive Aggression

Human violence can be categorized into two types: proactive aggression, which is calculated and planned, and reactive aggression, which is impulsive and defensive. Research shows that humans exhibit significantly lower levels of reactive aggression compared to chimpanzees, particularly when faced with minor threats within their own societies. This distinction highlights that, despite certain violent scenarios, the overall degree of impulsive violence in humans is reduced. An example of this can be seen in hunter-gatherer societies in challenging environments, where even amid social struggles, the impulsive violent reactions are less severe than those observed in our closest evolutionary relatives.
