Dialectics
Marks drew useful structures and vocabulary from Hegel's dialectics even though he ultimately disagreed with Hegel's views on reality. Dialectics is a system of reasoning with three stages: thesis, antithesis, and synthesis. It's not a new invention and has been used in ancient and medieval philosophy. The tension between seemingly opposite ideas leads to a transcendent union of good and bad.
