Freedom is of instrumental value rather than inherent, as it should exist within defined boundaries that uphold moral responsibilities. True liberty does not ennoble immoral actions; rather, it can increase moral culpability when exercised without the framework of virtue. In contemporary society, the emphasis on individual freedom often disregards these necessary constraints, leading to moral decline and a weakening of institutions. Freedom should not only be viewed as freedom from constraints but as freedom for meaningful purposes, like fulfilling obligations to family and community. This perspective aligns with religious teachings, which promote the idea of individuals fulfilling roles within a moral framework. The essential roles defined by faith provide a structure that channels freedom toward positive ends. When liberty undermines these roles, it leads to libertinism and destructive behaviors, ultimately causing suffering and unhappiness for the individual and those around them.
