NOTE

The Different Stages of Sleep: Understanding a Perfect Night's Sleep

Sleep is fundamentally different from wakefulness and cannot be replaced by any state of wakefulness./nThere are two major states of sleep: non-REM and REM, which are entirely different from each other./nWithin non-REM sleep, there are three stages: stage one, stage two, and the deep, slow-wave sleep./nDuring deep, slow-wave sleep, big, slow waves clean the brain and perform important restorative functions./nREM sleep is characterized by active dreaming and rapid eye movement./nHuman sleep cycles through the four states every 90 minutes or so./nFor a perfect night's sleep, four or five cycles of REM sleep are needed, totaling about seven and a half to eight hours.
