In the near future, we will be able to communicate with animals before fully understanding them. Experiments with zebra finches are set to begin soon, exploring two-way communication. However, we must be cautious as humpback whale songs can spread globally, potentially disrupting wisdom traditions. Within the next 12 months to five years, animal-to-AI communication will become a reality. To avoid potential misuse, protocols and norms similar to a Geneva Convention are necessary. Further discussions should also cover nefarious applications like precision hunting and fishing.
Two scientists explain how AI might help us translate animal communication, and what we might learn from their squawks, chirps, songs, and chatter. This episode was recorded live at the Aspen Ideas Festival.
