Quantifying Forgetfulness
Ebenhaus was the first scientist to quantify the speed at which we forget by memorizing arbitrary information and measuring recall over time. His research showed that within 24 hours, around 60% of memorized information is lost, with a steep curve of forgetting in the initial hours. The forgetting rate gradually declines over time, with the most significant forgetting occurring within the first day.
