406. The Nazis in Power: Hitler’s Road to War (Part 3)
The Rest Is History
Military-oriented infrastructure under Hitler's regime
The autobahns in Germany were not primarily created for work creation or unemployment relief but were solely for military purposes, strengthening and preparing Germany for war in Hitler's view. The infrastructure projects reflected Hitler's belief that if something didn't serve a military purpose or make Germany fitter and stronger for war, then it was considered pointless. Adam Tooze's book also highlights the lack of domestic cars in Germany during that period, with US, Britain, and Ireland having significantly higher vehicle ownership percentages compared to Germany.
