Notion goes through iterations of expansion and contraction to identify important problems and generate broad problem statements. They then prototype different approaches to solve the problems using various technologies and techniques. By dogfooding their prototypes internally and gathering user feedback, they determine which approaches are more promising. They recalibrate themselves with a clear understanding of the problem and the strength of a specific approach. Once they have a direction, they iterate towards a solution that meets their confidence in both user experience and model-up quality.
