The Rest Is History

NOTE

Expansion of Voting Rights and Introduction of Secret Ballots in Britain

The voting rights in Britain expanded over time starting with the Great Reform Act of 1832 which allowed 650,000 people to vote. Subsequent reforms in 1867 and 1884 increased the number of voters to 2 million and 6 million respectively. However, even by 1884, only 60% of men were eligible to vote, with women and men without enough property excluded. The introduction of secret ballots through the Ballot Act of 1872 was considered a fundamental principle of British democracy, despite being implemented relatively late.
