Inflation headwinds for offshore wind

NOTE

Challenges and Decline in Offshore Wind Investments

Offshore wind energy presents heightened complexities compared to onshore due to its remote locations and harsher environmental conditions, leading to increased technical and financial risks. Although offshore wind developers succeeded in building 21,000 megawatts of capacity in 2021, financial investments have notably declined, impacted primarily by inflation. 2022 witnessed record lows in investment decisions, with significant projects in Europe and America being delayed or canceled, collectively affecting more than 10% of the EU and US's installed offshore wind capacity. Furthermore, approximately 9.7 gigawatts of potential capacity in America remain at risk as developers face pressure to renegotiate existing contracts.
