The withdrawal of American power from the Middle East over the past two decades is the most significant development in the region. Previously, the United States and the Soviet Union held sway, but after a diplomatic maneuver by Kissinger, Egypt switched sides and the US became the dominant force. However, after the war in Iraq, the US realized it was over-invested in the Middle East and lacked the capacity to maintain stability.
