The great franciscan philosopher and theologian of the thirteenth century, saint bonadventure, was himself rather acal about what reason can accomplish, apart from faith. And so it you actually can go back to reading some of these mediaeval authors, and you find very sophisticated, and in some cases, even much more sophisticated, discussions of these questions than you will find even in contemporary literature.
