The focus of the paper on large language models is influenced by long-termist views and concerns about artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, the paper overlooks the harms of AI that already exist and are being addressed. The idea of pausing for no future harms is misleading. The conversation in ethics and NLP needs to shift away from the trolley problem.

Paris Marx is joined by Emily M. Bender to discuss what it means to say that ChatGPT is a “stochastic parrot,” why Elon Musk is calling to pause AI development, and how the tech industry uses language to trick us into buying its narratives about technology.
