NOTE

Muscle atrophy & type two fibers

Muscle atrophy in older individuals is not solely due to aging but rather a result of short successive periods of reduced physical activity leading to a decline in muscle mass. This decline starts slowly and accelerates in the seventh decade, becoming rapid and seemingly irreversible by the eighth decade. The loss of muscle mass can be attributed to a lack of recruiting type two muscle fibers, which happens when individuals avoid activities like using stairs or resistance training. This decline in muscle is often triggered by periods of inactivity due to factors like surgery, illness, or vacation. Recognizing these discrete declines and taking proactive measures to engage in physical activities that recruit type two muscle fibers can help prevent or reverse age-related muscle loss.
