Bureaucracy, when associated with security, privacy, and compliance, adds value to the business by implementing rules and processes. While bureaucracy is often seen negatively, there are good aspects to it. Good bureaucracy is characterized by efficiency, adaptability, and transparency. A bad bureaucracy, on the other hand, is bloated with heavy-handed controls and lacks the ability to adapt and change. Understanding these characteristics is crucial in creating a good bureaucracy that facilitates important tasks rather than hindering them.

Mark Schwartz is an Enterprise Strategist at AWS and the author of multiple books from IT Revolution. In this episode, we discuss his two latest books on the topics of bureaucracy and ethics. With a BS in computer science from Yale, a master’s in philosophy from Yale, and an MBA from Wharton, Mark is either an expert on the business value of IT or else he just thinks about it a lot.
