English language served as a unifying factor for Indians in the 19th century, as it was the common language to communicate across regional divides. The Indian National Congress required all delegates to speak English to participate in the national gatherings. The common enemy of oppression helped people from different regions unite towards a common goal of freedom. By tapping into cultural resources, religion, and older linkages, the Indian leaders were able to bring diverse groups together to work collectively towards freedom.
