Are self-driving cars really safer?
Self-driving cars eliminate risks like texting while driving, driving intoxicated, and driving tired. The comparison between human-driven and self-driving vehicles often overlooks the already existing problems with humans. Hindsight bias makes it seem obvious that human-driven vehicles were a mistake. This is illustrated by a study on NBA teams, where coaches made lineup changes after a one-point loss but not after a one-point win, despite the outcome being largely determined by luck. Our brains are wired to look for patterns, even in situations where they may not exist.
