The truly beautiful stops you in your tracks. The cross is ugly in the conventional sense, but if you see with the eyes of faith, it's the supreme expression of the beautiful. Often when you talk about the evangelistic role of beauty, you talk about it's a resting character anyway. So that strikes me that that's another way that the cross, and it's very horror, can play it some heroic kind of rest to person.
