NOTE

Advantages of Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) Over Hemoglobin A1C Measurement

The CGM offers advantages over measuring blood glucose using hemoglobin a1c due to potential inaccuracies caused by variations in red blood cell life. Hemoglobin a1c measures glycosylation on red blood cells and imputes average blood glucose levels based on a 90-day lifespan assumption. However, if red blood cell lifespan is shorter than 90 days, as in cases of anemia or bleeding, the average blood glucose estimate will be artificially low. Conversely, conditions where red blood cells persist longer can result in higher estimates. CGM mitigates these inaccuracies.
