NOTE

The Consequences of Selling a Company

The decision to sell a company can have varied outcomes on individuals. When reflecting on the experiences of 30 founders who sold their companies, half of them expressed satisfaction with their decision, while the other half regretted it. Among those who regretted selling, a portion continued working in the company post-sale and found the experience miserable. This group felt a significant loss of purpose despite the financial gain. The remaining individuals who did not stay with the company post-sale reported feeling the most miserable as they grappled with a sense of purposelessness after selling. Some of them resorted to substance abuse. This highlights that wealth cannot fill the void left by a lack of purpose, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a sense of direction and fulfillment beyond financial success.
