Writing for Human Consumption, Not Committees
The value of scientific writing lies in its simplicity, precision, and readability for human beings over committees. The conventional peer review system, based on trust and judgement of intellectual taste, has evolved into a committee-based, meritocratic approach, resulting in cumbersome and stilted writing. This type of writing, driven by the need for publishing volume, fails to engage readers, leading to a low readership of academic papers. The emphasis on producing numerous papers is often a strategy to meet government Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for scientific research funding. The current system tends to prioritize quantity over the quality and impact of research, as illustrated by the replication crisis in social sciences, highlighting the diminishing significance of paper publication in some fields.
