Depression can be seen as a state of behavioral shutdown where the investment system in our brain feels constrained and unable to achieve desired outcomes. This state is characterized by a decrease in investment efforts and a shift towards a negative valence system. The analogy of a writer sitting on top of an elephant is used to illustrate how our emotional and motivational processes influence our actions and how developing frontal lobe activation is key to align the 'writer' and the 'elephant' for effective behavior.
