Creating Composites in Data Analysis
In data analysis, composites are created by upweighting and downweighting different items to generate multiple composites. This process can result in as many composites as there are items, providing flexibility but requiring careful consideration to avoid simply trading items for composites. Comparing composite models to the common factor model, composites focus on creating a composite of variables while the common factor model assumes variables are influenced by underlying common factors. The general linear model often uses composites to explain external variables, forming them through a supervised process to understand relationships and explanations in the data.
