In the 19 forties and 50s, music was playing this vital function as being an outlet for a certain sort of quantitative activity. But now all those people who really love math can just go become data scientists or theoretical biologists or whatever. And so maybe there's one math professor job, but there's a hell of a lot of musician jobs, right? Because people need music. I'm not going to fall into the trap of wishing that everybody practised their piano for an hour a day and played bok fugues when they came home from work.
