The Illusion of Collective Intelligence and the Importance of Collectivity in Technology
The term collective intelligence is explored in opposition to artificial intelligence. Situated knowledge is proposed as a third way of understanding truth, acknowledging diverse perspectives. AI presents an illusion of collective voices, but is controlled by Open AI. The maintenance of the digital commons and collaborative knowledge production is valued. Using closed AI models disconnects us from real people and raises concerns about collective epistemics. We should be cautious of surveillance and prioritize human reinvention. Technology must be held to higher standards.
