As a musician, you are in the apparel business. That is what you do. You'd lose money making music, and then you'd barely break even playing shows and making door money if you're getting of it from the promoter. There is tremendous meaning in buying a band's tea shirt if that meaning has been created for you by the band and by the show and by the crowd and by your friends. And this is what bands do. Bands are in the business of creating meaning and then selling merch that have meaning to them.
