Innovate to Revive: Baseball's Streaming Future

Baseball is at a pivotal moment as it navigates the evolving landscape of sports broadcasting. The trend shows that struggling sports leagues are turning to streaming, and baseball finds itself in a precarious position with its current deals, notably the diminishing contract with ESPN. As the league faces a generational challenge, it is exploring innovative strategies to reshape its broadcasting bundles, moving away from individual game and team packages towards a combined offering that enhances the value of the entire league. The competitive interest from major broadcasting entities indicates a complex renegotiation process ahead, where baseball's ability to adapt creatively will be crucial for its future in the streaming era.

And I think we're at the dawn of a new bundle of how baseball is watched. And one of the interesting things about sports, in my mind, and you think about sports in the sort of streaming diaspora is, it's always the most desperate sports that go to streaming first, right? Like it was MLS. The Pac-12 was... Rodeo. Rodeo, exactly. I don't want to disparage our good friends at WWE, but you know, they're going for it. And you know, the Pac-12 was going to do an Apple deal and then it blinked. And now there is no Pac-12. Not sure what should have happened there. But baseball's in like the murky middle here. It has this Friday deal with Apple. It's gonna have to renegotiate downward, what it makes from ESPN, like 540 million bucks here for Sunday Night Baseball. Baseball knows that it has a generational challenge, and it's gonna need to renegotiate its deals. And I think that they are not just streaming curious, but I think that they are ready to figure out how they can create a right size bundle that lifts up, I'm trying to figure out the best way to two phrases, but lifts up the power of the bundle of baseball teams over individual games or individual team packages. And I think they're interested in getting very creative. And ESPN was probably circling this thing like a hawk, with all the leverage in the world, and now it will be a serious bidding situation, because all the big boys are in there, and they're all trying to figure out how they can bring this onto their own O&O.
