NOTE

Love Is a Decision, Not a Feeling

Emotions are often seen as automatic responses to situations, but individuals have the power to choose different emotional responses, particularly during difficult times. For instance, sadness can be transformed into humor as a coping mechanism. This notion is exemplified by comedians who often channel their sadness into their craft as a way to feel better and uplift others. Additionally, in the face of division and polarization, there lies an opportunity to consciously choose love over anger, as emphasized in Matthew 544's call to love one’s enemies. Love, defined by philosopher Thomas Aquinas, is about willing the good for others, reflecting a decision rather than an emotion. This conscious choice to love, even in adversity, not only alters one's own state of being but can positively impact others as well. Furthermore, introspection reveals that rather than solely blaming external chaos, individuals should reflect on their own mental states and behaviors, recognizing their ability to effect change within themselves. Ultimately, while it may be tempting to wait for external conditions to improve for personal happiness, real power lies in managing one's inner self and choosing love as a guiding principle.
