NOTE

Understanding Different Definitions of Values

Values can be categorized into different frameworks, each serving distinct roles in society and personal life. Firstly, some values function as political identifiers, often encapsulated in terms like anti-racism, equality, or feminism, which reflect affiliations in political discussions. These represent more of a collective stance rather than individual depth. Secondly, there are societal norms which express expectations for behavior that should be upheld by everyone, such as gender norms or honesty; these values are meant to foster a shared understanding of acceptable conduct. The third type of values, termed 'personal values' or 'sources of meaning,' focuses on individual significance and preference in one's lived experience. This deeper layer includes personal desires for honesty or authentic relationships, emphasizing a subjective understanding of what is meaningful in life. Distinguishing these types is crucial for navigating political discourse, social expectations, and personal fulfillment.
