Fingerprints can be recreated using sound waves when swiping on a touchscreen according to research by Chinese and US researchers. This new side channel attack can replicate fingerprints with 28% success for partial prints and 9-10% for complete prints in just five attempts. The study, conducted in February 2024 by SINGHWA University and the University of Colorado, highlights the ease with which data can be gathered and reconstructed, underscoring the potential challenges in the evolving information environment where surveillance and intelligence gathering can become significantly more accessible.
