Internal Change Is Hard
🗣️ "People underestimate how crazy hard [consistency] is in a corporate environment."
- Consider what's in it for others when trying to implement change. Ask: "What are you taking away that allows them to even fit this in their head?"
- Imagine a successful post-mortem six months out. What's a reasonable explanation for the success? Documenting templates won't cut it.
- Example: The "Big Messy Projects" (BMP) concept succeeded because it gave a name to a common anxiety and provided a path to get things done.
- Internal change is more challenging than external consulting because you lack pre-sold audiences and must address internal dynamics.
- People often underestimate inertia, individual motivations (what's in it for them?), and systems' resistance to change.
Key takeaway: Account for these factors when planning internal change initiatives.
