GUEST SERIES | Dr. Matt Walker: Improve Sleep to Boost Mood & Emotional Regulation

Huberman Lab

NOTE

The Impact of Sleep on Emotional Regulation

Lack of sleep results in the disconnection between the medial prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, leading to heightened emotional reactivity and decreased regulatory control over emotions. The medial prefrontal cortex normally acts as a rational control mechanism on deep emotional brain centers, but this connection is disrupted without sufficient sleep. As a consequence, the brain becomes overly reactive emotionally, lacking the necessary regulatory control to modulate emotions effectively.
