The adrenal gland produces adrenaline and cortisol, regulated by the nervous system and the cortex respectively. The cortex has three layers; the middle layer produces cortisol, the innermost layer produces DHEA, and the outermost layer produces mineralic corticoids, which regulate electrolytes and water. Cortisol, also known as a stress hormone, is responsible for increasing the amount of glucose in the blood.
