The granular prefrontal cortex models an animal's own thinking, referred to as metacognition in psychology. Damage to this area leads to struggles in theory of mind, making it difficult for individuals to consider other people's mental states. Studies have shown that individuals with granular prefrontal damage, without hippocampal damage, have difficulty imagining rich future scenes but readily describe themselves and their personality traits.
