The Importance of Flexible Referential Communication
Human communication is what's called flexible referential communication. When we use a word or a gesture or a symbol, we tend our audience to recognize it as referring to something. So if i say the word cup, i intend you, the listener, to recognize that this sound cup refers to the particular object i am holding or i am looking at, which contains coffee.
