The Dichotomy of Existence: Striving or Contemplation

"Is existence worth it or is life just perpetual suffering?" According to Schopenhauer, the default state of life is boredom, which is the sensation of existence's worthlessness and vanity. He proposes two ways out: to constantly strive for something and find distraction from suffering, or to step back and appreciate life as an intellectual observer. These are the only options to escape perpetual mental suffering.
