Ep 393: Amrita Agarwal Wants to Solve Healthcare

The Seen and the Unseen - hosted by Amit Varma

NOTE

Understanding the Distinction Between Healthcare and Public Health

Healthcare and public health serve distinct roles in society, where healthcare focuses on individual treatment and intervention, such as providing medication for malaria, while public health addresses broader societal needs, like mosquito control to prevent disease spread. Public goods, such as clean air, safe roads, and public parks, often require government intervention because there's typically little incentive for private entities to provide them. Effective governance means prioritizing public goods, to foster better health outcomes and efficiencies that the market can't address. While private markets are better suited for delivering healthcare solutions due to their efficiency, equity issues arise when considering access and affordability for individuals. Therefore, financial support or regulatory frameworks can ensure equitable access without distorting market incentives. The market mechanism, whether led by private or government actors, is essential in delivering healthcare effectively, while government intervention should aim for funding and regulating public goods that support overall community health.
