Marks attempted to answer the social question using German philosophy, English economics, and French social theory. Capitalism's mode of production had certain laws that needed addressing, but understanding what needed to be addressed was difficult. Marks developed the labor theory of value to answer where profit comes from. Profit-seeking commodity exchange was not just confined to small, local towns, but enveloped every aspect of social and economic life.
